Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Color Palette Wheel Generator

What is the Color Palette Wheel Generator?

The Color Palette Wheel Generator is a free online design tool that creates beautiful, harmonious color palettes using a spin wheel mechanism. Based on color theory principles, it generates sets of colors that work together naturally — whether you need a bold complementary contrast or a gentle analogous flow.

Beyond wheel generation, the tool also extracts color palettes from uploaded images, lets you build full brand kits, and exports professional palette boards in multiple sizes — all from your browser, with zero sign-up required.

How do I generate a color palette with the spin wheel?

Generating a palette takes just two steps:

  1. Set your base color using the color picker in the top header
  2. Click the Spin button in the center of the color wheel

The wheel spins and generates a harmonious palette based on your chosen harmony type. You can change the harmony type (Complementary, Triadic, Analogous, etc.) in the left panel before spinning. Each spin creates a unique variation — spin as many times as you like until you find the perfect palette.

How do I extract colors from an image?

Extracting colors from images is one of the most powerful features:

  1. Click "Upload Image" or drag any photo into the image upload area
  2. The tool automatically extracts the dominant colors from your image
  3. Optionally, use the Eyedropper tool to manually click specific pixels
  4. Save the extracted palette and export or add it to a brand kit

This is perfect for matching a brand palette to a product photo, extracting a mood board's colors, or building a palette inspired by nature photography.

What is a Brand Kit and how do I create one?

A Brand Kit is a complete visual identity package — your brand's colors, logo, tagline, website, and source images all in one exportable board.

To create a Brand Kit:

  1. Go to the Brand Kits tab in the right panel
  2. Click "+ New Brand Kit" — it opens immediately (no naming popup)
  3. Enter your brand name, tagline, and website URL
  4. Upload your logo (optional)
  5. Add colors — click "+ Add Color" to add any hex color, or link image palettes
  6. Use the Board Editor to drag elements around the canvas and preview the layout
  7. Export as Landscape (1920×1080), Portrait (1080×1920), or custom size
What export formats are available?

Every palette and brand kit can be exported in multiple formats:

  • PNG Color Card — A clean 720px card showing all colors with hex codes, perfect for sharing or documentation
  • Landscape Board (1920×1080) — 16:9 brand board, perfect for presentations, YouTube channel art, or desktop wallpapers
  • Portrait Board (1080×1920) — 9:16 format for Instagram Stories, TikTok, or mobile backgrounds
  • Custom Size — Enter any width and height in pixels (100px–8000px) for print, web, or any specific use case

All exports are high-resolution PNG files with no watermarks.

What color harmonies does the spin wheel support?

The wheel supports six color theory harmonies:

  • Complementary — Two colors directly opposite on the wheel. High contrast, vibrant, great for CTAs and highlights
  • Triadic — Three colors evenly spaced (120° apart). Balanced and colorful, works well for diverse palettes
  • Analogous — Colors adjacent on the wheel. Harmonious and natural-feeling, great for calm or organic designs
  • Split-Complementary — A base color plus two neighbors of its complement. Softer contrast than full complementary
  • Tetradic/Square — Four colors evenly spaced. Rich and complex, requires careful balancing in design
  • Monochromatic — Multiple shades and tints of a single hue. Clean, elegant, easy to implement
Is this color palette generator free?

To save a palette as a named preset, click "Save as Preset" from the palette detail view or brand kit modal. Presets appear in the presets panel for quick reload.
